Ready to drive

The government’s Ready to Pass campaign is the official guide to learning in the right order, and to booking the practical test only when you can drive on your own.

The campaign checklist

Five signs you are ready for the test

DVSA says you will usually be ready when you can say yes to all five. Read the checklist on the Ready to Pass site. If you are not there, moving the test is allowed when you do it in time. Check the current booking rules on GOV.UK before you rely on a date.

1

You do not need prompts

You deal with junctions, roundabouts and other traffic consistently, without the instructor telling you to check the mirror or ease off. That is the “independent” level in the 27 driving skills.

2

No serious or dangerous mistakes

A fault you can laugh off in a lesson is still a fault. If serious or dangerous mistakes are still appearing, the test is early. A Paulos instructor will say so.

3

You can pass a mock test

A mock test uses the same shape as the real one: eyesight, safety questions, a manoeuvre, independent driving, and a drive of normal length. It shows the pattern of faults while there is still time to work on them.

4

You have a way to handle nerves

Nerves are part of the test and part of driving afterwards. Practising how you settle yourself is one of the five points, not an extra.

5

Your instructor agrees

Ready to Pass tells learners to listen when an instructor says they are not ready. Paulos will not dress up a gap in the syllabus as a date you should grab.

Learn in this order

The current Ready to Pass advice is to choose an instructor first, start the Highway Code, start lessons, study for theory alongside them, take theory when your instructor thinks you are ready, add private practice only when they say so, and book the practical test last.

Private practice needs the right insurance and L plates (D plates in Wales). It sits between lessons. It does not replace them.

Why Paulos

Learn it with an instructor, on your roads

Start with Paulos and you get an instructor who can make that judgement with you, on the roads you will use, before any test fee is spent.

Paulos School of Motoring teaches one-to-one in Newcastle upon Tyne, Leeds and Birmingham. Lessons are with a DVSA-approved instructor, pickup is included in the neighbourhoods we list, and nothing is paid on this page. Tell us your area and we will match you with a local instructor.
