The process

How ADI training works

Becoming an ADI means checking you are eligible, applying, preparing with a trainer and passing three qualifying tests. Paulos School of Motoring can support you through that training. We do not publish a pass rate, and we will not promise an outcome we cannot guarantee.

1

Check your eligibility

Anyone who charges for car driving lessons has to qualify as an Approved Driving Instructor, or ADI. Before you apply, check that you meet the DVSA rules on age, driving experience and the time you have held a full licence. The detailed conditions sit on GOV.UK and can change, so use the official guidance rather than a copied list.

2

DBS check and application

Starting the ADI application includes a new Disclosure and Barring Service check. A DBS check you already hold for another job is not enough. Once that is underway, you apply to become a driving instructor through the official DVSA process.

3

Prepare with a trainer

The qualifying tests are easier to approach with structured training behind you. Paulos School of Motoring can support prospective instructors while they prepare. Tell us where you are starting from and we will talk through what training would help.
