Driving skills that get you ready for the road

The practical test, the theory test and the Highway Code all ask for the same thing: a driver who can cope on their own. These guides explain what that means, and how lessons with Paulos School of Motoring cover it.

The official syllabus

Lessons follow the DVSA skills for learning to drive, not a shortcut that only lasts until test day.

One instructor, one car

You are not sharing the lesson. The car and the instructor are yours for those hours.

Local roads

Practice is in Newcastle upon Tyne, Leeds or Birmingham, on the kinds of roads you will use after you pass.

The 27 driving skills

DVSA splits learning to drive into 27 skills, from cockpit checks to independent driving. Paulos lessons work through them until you can do them without being prompted.

A safe driver on the road

A pass is the minimum standard. Night driving, poor weather and motorways are not on the car test, and they are part of driving for real.

Why safe driving matters after the test

Ready to drive

The government’s Ready to Pass campaign says you should book the practical test when your instructor agrees you are ready, not when a cancellation appears.

The Highway Code

Theory questions are based on it, and so are the decisions you make at junctions. Lessons are easier when you and your instructor are using the same rules.

How the Highway Code fits your lessons

Show me, tell me

The examiner asks two vehicle-safety questions on the practical test. Practising them in the lesson car means they do not use up the drive.

The theory test

You need a theory pass before you can book the practical. Pupils training with Paulos can ask for Theory Test Pro access while they learn.
