Become a Driving Instructor
Turn your driving experience into a rewarding career helping new drivers build confidence, independence and safe driving habits. Training prices are discussed individually. Get in touch and we will talk through pricing with you.
How ADI training works
Becoming an ADI means checking you are eligible, applying, preparing with a trainer and passing three qualifying tests. Paulos School of Motoring can support you through that training. We do not publish a pass rate, and we will not promise an outcome we cannot guarantee.
Check your eligibility
Anyone who charges for car driving lessons has to qualify as an Approved Driving Instructor, or ADI. Before you apply, check that you meet the DVSA rules on age, driving experience and the time you have held a full licence. The detailed conditions sit on GOV.UK and can change, so use the official guidance rather than a copied list.
DBS check and application
Starting the ADI application includes a new Disclosure and Barring Service check. A DBS check you already hold for another job is not enough. Once that is underway, you apply to become a driving instructor through the official DVSA process.
Prepare with a trainer
The qualifying tests are easier to approach with structured training behind you. Paulos School of Motoring can support prospective instructors while they prepare. Tell us where you are starting from and we will talk through what training would help.
Theory test
Part 1 covers theory and hazard perception. The current GOV.UK test fee is £81. Government fees can change, so check the official page before you book.
Driving ability
Part 2 assesses your own driving to the standard expected of an instructor. The current GOV.UK test fee is £111.
Gain teaching experience
After passing Part 2, you can apply for a six-month trainee driving instructor licence if you want to teach pupils before Part 3. The trainee licence is optional. The current fee is £140.
Instructional ability
Part 3 assesses how you teach pupils. The current GOV.UK test fee is £111.
Register as an ADI
When you have completed the qualifying tests, you register as an Approved Driving Instructor. The current fee for the first ADI certificate is £300. GOV.UK says successful candidates must register within 12 months of passing the tests.
A note on fees
DVSA and government fees are shown as a guide and can change. Please check GOV.UK for the latest fees and requirements.
